REPLACED: When Pixel Art Feels Like Cinema
A stylish sci-fi adventure with incredible atmosphere, fluid combat and a unique visual identity, even if its gameplay feels a little simple.
REPLACED was one of my most anticipated games this year, so by the time I finally got to play it after all the delays, I was carrying a lot of excitement into it. And honestly, the demo had already sold me long ago. I knew I was in for something visually special, I just hoped the full game would deliver on that promise too. And for the most part, it did.

What is it about?
Replaced is a 2.5D sci-fi retro-futuristic action platformer where you play as R.E.A.C.H. - an artificial intelligence trapped in a human body against its own will. Replaced combines cinematic platforming, pixel art and free-flow action combat set in an alternative 1980’s.
Story & Atmosphere
The biggest thing REPLACED gets right for me is its vibe. This game just looks incredible. The pixelated visuals, the moody lighting, the camera angles; there were so many moments where it felt less like I was playing a side-scroller and more like I was moving through some lost sci-fi film. I was hooked by that almost immediately.
And the atmosphere carries a lot of weight too. There are quiet moments, strange pauses, stretches where the game almost wants you to just sit in its world for a bit. I’ll be honest, sometimes those quieter moments threw me off from exploring more than I wanted to but they also added to the mood. Even when I wasn’t fully vibing with the pacing, I appreciated what the game was trying to do.
Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, I had a good time. The combat feels fluid, and when fights click, they feel satisfying. But I have to mention the one thing I kept laughing about while playing - I swear half the time I felt like I was just holding my controller’s left joystick to the right and letting the game happen 😂 Like… tap it in one direction and you can probably finish most of the missions (until you reach the platform puzzle sections, ofcourse)
That doesn’t mean the gameplay is bad at all; just a little more straightforward than I expected. Also, there’s basically no HUD telling you where to go, which could be frustrating at times. But weirdly, I didn’t totally hate that. If anything, it forced me to pay attention and explore instead of blindly following markers.
Graphics / Visuals
This is where REPLACED absolutely shines. I mean, this is the reason I wanted to play it in the first place. The art direction is ridiculous. In a good way.
Everything feels handcrafted; the environments, animations, lighting, even the framing of certain scenes. There’s a cinematic confidence to the whole thing that I honestly don’t see very often. And even if the gameplay didn’t reinvent anything, the visual identity alone made this feel unique.
Audio / Sound
The music was great too and it fits the whole retro-futuristic world wonderfully. It never felt like background filler; it supported the mood constantly. A lot of why the game works emotionally, I think, comes from how well the sound and visuals are working together. And when a game nails that combination, you feel it.
Length & Replayability
This is probably where I land in the middle. I enjoyed finishing REPLACED a lot, but I don’t see myself replaying it. And I’m okay with that.
Not every game needs to become a forever game. Sometimes one really memorable playthrough is enough.
Smash Hit Score: 3.5/5
REPLACED isn’t perfect. It has rough edges, the gameplay can feel a little too simple at times, and there were moments where the pacing didn’t fully work for me. But I also think after quite some time, someone made a game that actually feels unique in design and vibe and that matters!
I came away from it thinking: yeah, I’m glad I played that. And honestly? That’s a pretty good feeling to leave a game with.
