To celebrate Spider-Man Day, I decided to revisit the one that started it all: Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002). It’s been about 2–3 years since my last watch but this film always brings me back to a very specific moment in my life. I still remember watching it on my 5th birthday and being completely in awe. Since then, Spider-Man has been my favourite Marvel superhero and rewatching this film only reminded me why. Sam Raimi really is the GOAT for setting the tone of what superhero films could look and feel like.
Synopsis
Set in a heartfelt, early-2000s New York, the film follows Peter Parker: a shy, awkward teenager who gains spider-like abilities after a bite from a genetically modified spider. As he learns to balance his personal life, powers and responsibilities, Peter becomes Spider-Man and finds himself going head-to-head with the menacing Green Goblin. It’s a story of growth, loss and the birth of a hero; told in the most sincere, comic-book-meets-cinema kind of way.
